Courses

There are an increasing number of courses on offer which are designed with disabled students in mind.
These range from those offering a BTEC in performing arts to access to degree programmes.

 

Birkbeck College, University of London
Certificated Part-time courses: Foundation, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Contemporary Dance training, which inspires self-exploration and growth. Birkbeck dance courses are committed to widening participation and creating a culture of integration. Evening and weekend classes are held at Sadlers Wells Theatre and The Place. Both facilities have disabled access. There is no upper age limit.

Hereward College
Programmes of study include National Diploma in Performing Arts and GCSE Expressive Arts.
This is a national integrated college for disabled students.

Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts
Certificate of Higher Education - Performing Arts for Disabled People.
Solid Foundations is a unique foundation course in the performing arts
designed with and for disabled people wishing to enter higher education.
It covers acting, movement, percussion, voice and video
and students may transfer onto the BA programme on successful completion of the course.

Companies

Your National Dance Agency or Regional Arts Board will have information on integrated workshops and initiatives in your area
and there may be a Youth Group you can join.

It may be useful to contact a Company which specialises in integrated work or which works with disabled performers.

Anjali Dance Company
Anjali is a professional touring dance company for people with learning disabilities.
We offer classes for all ages, workshops, accredited training Entry/Level 1, two and three, apprenticeships for dancers, training for workshop leaders and consultancy.

The UK's leading integrated dance company runs an extensive programme of workshops and classes including
choreographic residencies and inset training for people with or without disabilities.

Common Ground Sign Dance Theatre
ommon Ground Sign Dance Theatre is a cross art form company founded in 1986.
It is run by both Deaf and Hearing people.
The Company specialises in work with deaf, disabled and non-disabled groups.
All projects are devised and led by both deaf and hearing performers.

Magpie Dance
Magpie Dance Company is a Group of adults with learning disabilities,
who collaborate with professional artists and undertake education,community and performance work.
Magpie also holds a weekly community dance class for anybody who is interested

British Sports Association for the Disabled
This association encourages, promotes and develops all forms of sports and non-competitive activities,
including dance, movement, fitness training for disabled people - whatever the nature of the disability.

The Place
From mid 2001 the building will be entirely accessible to people with disabilities for the first time.
This National Dance Agency periodically undertakes projects with integrated groups.

Jabadao - A community dance resource.
Jabadao offers creative projects and staff training within a wide variety of health, social service
and community settings throughout West Yorkshire and the North of England.
Jabadao was set up in 1985 through an initiative from Yorkshire Arts
and the regional arts funding body. The skills drawn upon are from social and celebratory dance,
creative dance theories of non-verbal communication, movement observation and dance therapy.

Extend
Extend aims to enhance the quality of life, improving health, vitality and mobility through movement
to music. It is designed as a recreational activity, using graded exercises for senior citizens and people with
disabilities of all ages. Courses for teachers are run in various parts of the country.

Margaret Morris Movement
Margaret Morris Movement Therapy incorporates exercises which are specially designed to help different
physical conditions, the work has generally proved its usefulness with both mental and physical disablement.
The dance element remains important. Courses for teachers are run in various parts of the country.

The Central Council of Physical Recreation
There are 27 national organisations for exercise, movement and dance in membership
of the CCPR's Movement and Dance division. They provide opportunities for over 5 million
people of all ages and abilities each week. For a copy of their Directory

Wheelchair Dance Association
The association was formed in 1974. It grew out of lessons devised to assist new wheelchair users
learn how best to cope with their new means of locomotion. There are now regional,
national and international festivals.
